There was a time when I had four very special friends. The five of us used to be together most of the time. Once, when we were only 14 to 15 years old, we even had a picnic in a nearby field for the whole day. One day, all five of us were sitting in that same field. The unique thing about this field is that there’s a big banyan tree planted right in the middle of it. Apart from this banyan tree, there’s no other tree or plant nearby. So, all five of us were sitting under this banyan tree.

Before I tell you the rest of the story, you should know the names of my four friends, or else you might get confused. Their names are:
- Shekh Sharif Rehman
- Mohd Faizaan Khaan
- Mohd Shafeeq Ansari
- Mohd Naseem Ulla

Now, all five of us were standing in the shade right below the tree, and then, after taking off our shoes, four of us sat on our shoes. But Shafeeq was standing a little apart, about two handspans away from us. After that, the four of us started jokingly teasing each other. Meanwhile, Shafeeq said, “Do you all know that a lion lives in this field?” Hearing this, the four of us started laughing, and I said, “Yes, a lion lives here, but that lion is none other than me! Did you just find out today?” To this, Shafeeq replied, “I’m not joking, I’m telling the truth!” So, Faizaan, who couldn’t stop laughing, said, “If you prove there’s a lion here, I’ll treat you to dinner tonight.”

Hearing this from Faizaan, I held his shoulder and said with a laugh, “Don’t tempt him with food because there’s no guarantee that if the lion doesn’t come, Shafeeq won’t turn into one himself just to get dinner from you.” Hearing this, Sharif, who was sitting next to me, said, “Even if he turns into a lion, he’ll look more like a dog than a lion.” Shafeeq got angry at this funny remark and said, “Just wait and see how I summon the lion here.”

Saying this, he raised his hands to shoulder height and slightly bent his fingers like claws. After that, he closed his eyes and made a facial expression as if he were very angry. But I swear, his expression looked exactly like that of a dog, which made the four of us laugh so hard that we had to press our mouths tightly with our hands to stop the sound from coming out. Because Shafeeq was already so angry, and we didn’t want him to get even angrier because of our laughter.

After that, he took a deep breath and started making sounds like a lion, but he could not do it because he got stuck in the middle due to a dry throat. So Naseem said that it does not matter; try one more time; if it comes out this time, then the lion will be in front of us. Shafeeq tried one more time and took a deep breath. After which, he wanted to make the sound of a lion, but by mistake, the sound of a dog came out of his mouth. Due to this, the four of us who were controlling our laughter within limits now became unlimited. That is, we automatically removed our hands from our mouths and started laughing loudly. And this laughter was as if a hundred devils were laughing together.

This day is truly unforgettable for me. Even now, when the four of us friends get together, we always bring up this memory—how Shafeeq’s fierce roar turned into a dog’s bark, how Faizaan couldn’t stop laughing like a madman, and how Sharif was the first to break into a fit of laughter.
